Opt-outs across the country
The Montgomery County School Board honored notice and opt-out requests for decades and still provides opt-outs for the sex education unit of state-mandated health classes. It’s common practice in schools across the nation.
Thirty-eight states, including the District of Columbia, require parental opt-outs. Four states require a parental opt-in before children receive instruction related to sexuality and gender. Six other states have a combination of opt-out and opt-in rights. Only three states, Delaware, North Dakota and South Dakota, are silent on the matter of opt-out protections. None have gone so far as to deny parents notice, opt-ins, or opt-outs.
Maryland is one of the 47 states that require opt-in or opt-out provisions for sex education in schools. So why should Montgomery County be the exception?
Polling Supports Opt-outs for Parents
Americans support parental opt-outs. In a recent poll, 77% of Americans agreed with curriculum opt-outs for reasons of faith or age-appropriateness concerns.
